What are shipping containers made of?

Shipping containers are made from Corten weathering steel. This steel forms a stable surface rust layer that resists further corrosion, lasting 20 to 40 years. The floor is marine-grade plywood, treated to resist moisture and insects. Door seals are heavy rubber. Corner castings are cast steel rated to ISO 1161 standards.

Did you know?
Container walls are usually thinner than most people expect. Their strength comes less from thick steel and more from the corrugated shape, which works like a series of structural ribs.
