How much does a 20ft shipping container weigh?

An empty 20ft shipping container weighs about 2,200 kg. Loaded, it can hold up to 28 tonnes of cargo. The walls are 1.6 mm Corten steel, and the floor is marine-grade plywood. Most road transport caps loaded weight at 24 tonnes due to truck rules.

Did you know?
The 20ft container became the backbone of global trade partly because it balances payload and handling efficiency. Dense cargo often reaches road-weight limits before the container runs out of space.
